Nashville-based band Night Beds is the musical group headed by 23-year-old Winston Yellen. Their latest album, Country Sleep, came out February 5th on Dead Oceans, and last month they came through Seattle to play at Barboza. Yellen’s falsetto often draws an obvious comparison to the likes of Bon Iver, but listeners will also pick up on bits of Wilco and Ryan Adams shining through. Comparisons aside, the calmly expansive sound of Night Beds, garnished with a sort of dreamy country-western nostalgia, shows that Yellen and company have earned their place in the realm of modern country rock and roll.
Pitchfork has called Yellen “the beautiful new stranger in town,” and with his altogether striking and down to earth performance, it is easy to see why. In their performance at Barboza, Night Beds performed songs from Country Sleep impeccably, and even tossed in some covers: Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon”, and another song by alt-rocker Mac DeMarco. Though Yellen is keenly aware that Night Beds is one of many groups in the indie/folk/country/rock community, the collective talent, quality of performance, and up-front authenticity of Night Beds commanded the audience’s attention throughout the set.
Check out Night Beds' latest album Country Sleep, and expect great things from them in the years to come.
